Bible Studies

ADULTS: Book of James Bible Study

We will begin a study of the book of James on October 8th. We will meet every other Sunday from 3:30 – 5:00 pm in the chapel. So the schedule will be October 8th, 22nd, November 5th, 19th, and December 3rd and 17th.

Volunteer Opportunities

Youth Meetings Sunday Evening

We’re looking for volunteers willing to prepare a meal for our very active, very hungry youth group. Are you willing to not only drop off a crock pot of soup or chili, a tray of sandwiches, or other yummy food for our youth, but join us in sharing the meal and fellowship with the youth one Sunday evening every few weeks or months?

EDUCATION: Amigos Readers After-School Program

If school is in session, you can count on hearing the laughter of kids ringing from the top floor of our Education Building. This is where we host Casa de Amistad’s Amigos Readers program. From 3 until 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, students ranging from Pre-K to 12th grade flock to us for homework help, computer access, and help with or resources for their projects. We’re always in need of adult volunteers to assist students — and no, you don’t have to have been a teacher to volunteer!

FASHION: Secret Boutique

We all want to look good and feel good about ourselves. Unfortunately, for too many middle- and high-school students, looking good and feeling good about themselves is something that seems to be out of reach — particularly for those who live in or on the fringes of poverty. Become part of our clothing ministry and help us change the lives of students in our community.

Through our Secret Boutique ministry, we provide:

  • Free, fashionable clothing in a secret upscale retail setting where our customers are VIPs and are treated to an incredible “shopping” experience
  • Fashion advice, wardrobe consultations, and Personal Shopping Support
  • Free hair cuts, styling services, manicures and pedicures, and personal care products
  • Beauty, Fitness, Health, and Wellness classes
  • Volunteer opportunities for students and adults designed to foster a sense of community and provide a network of support for students who are often targeted by bullies
  • Anti-bullying, anger management, and conflict resolution education for students, families, and adults

Help us change the face of middle- and high-school and put a smile back on a student’s face. Here’s how:

1. Donate: Share your freshly-laundered clothing, cash, or new un-opened personal care products.

2. Volunteer: We can always use more volunteers. Help us sort and prepare clothes for display or stock a local clothing closet. Get in on the ground floor and help set up a boutique location. Professional stylists and aestheticians are invited to volunteer their services during boutique events. If this tugs at your heart and you want to help, we can find a way to plug you in.

3. Sponsor: Sponsor a student, a rack of clothes, an event, or become a business partner.

GARDENING/LANDSCAPE: Community Garden

We try to be the best stewards of what God has graciously provided as possible. For that reason, we set aside a portion of our church grounds for use as a Community Garden. You can support this initiative by donating soil and amendments, seedlings, seeds, and tools, or by volunteering to help in the garden. We are also seeking the help of professional landscapers and agriculturalists in expanding our existing garden.

GENERAL LABOR: Painting Rooms

Our facilities are used daily by various community groups, from an after-school tutorial program and Girl Scouts to civic groups and a basic-needs pantry. With all this traffic, the walls of our Education Building need painting.

MISSIONS: Casa de Amistad

INFORMATION GOES HERE

MISSIONS: Disciple’s Kitchen (Saturday breakfast)

On Saturday mornings, we are blessed by the presence of members of our community’s homeless population who join us for breakfast and the opportunity to receive free personal care products and other basic necessities. We’d love for you to join us as we welcome our brothers and sisters into the house — and arms — of God.

MISSIONS: God’s Table (Wednesday dinner)

Each Wednesday, we serve a free, hot meal to anywhere from 60 to 120 members of our community.  After we eat, we worship together. We’re always looking for individuals and groups interested helping us make this happen.

OPERATIONAL: Professional Services

We spend as little money as possible on the upkeep and daily operation of our church, choosing instead to invest what money we do have in improving the lives of our neighbors. For this reason, church members volunteer to clean the church, mow the lawn, and do basic repairs. However, there are some services our church members do not have the skills or time to supply.

We welcome the partnership of businesses and individuals who can help us stretch our money and time by taking on some of the things we simply do not have the experience or expertise to do. Some of our particular needs at this time include digital media services, business start-up consultation, and simple maintenance.

YOUTH: #ItBeginsWithMe Social Media Project

Each day, millions of middle- and high-school students hold in their hands the power to change the world. Thanks to social media, teens have been given a powerful voice that we are harnessing to work for peace and create positive change in our own lives, our community, our country, and our world.

Through a grant from the United Methodist Foundation of the UMC’s Virginia Conference, we have secured some of the funds to build a website at www.peaceandchange.org. This site will be a hub for social media content created by teens from around the globe with the intended purpose of spreading peace and creating positive change. The site will also be a source of education for students, parents, educators, and the public on the  social justice issues facing teens.  To make it happen we need:

  • Students committed to peace and positive change who will create content to be shared on our social media platforms using #ItBeginsWithMe
  • Teachers who will challenge their students to create content for #ItBeginsWithMe campaigns or sponsor #ItBeginsWithMe clubs at their schools
  • Donors to fund our website and social media platforms, promotional materials, and administrative costs
  • Web designers and developers to help build our platforms and apps
  • Graphic designers to create a line of Peace Tees and design print and digital promotional materials, graphics, logos, etc.
  • Local, regional, and national celebrities to help launch our Pies for Peace viral video challenge, wear our #ItBeginsWithMe/PeaceAndChange.org tees, and get the word out about our mission.
  • YOU!

For information on how you can support #ItBeginsWithMe, help launch www.peaceandchange.org, and/or volunteer your time or services, email jenellewatson@gmail.com. Please note that in keeping with our Safe Sanctuary policy, all adult volunteers will be required to complete a background check prior to working with youth and children.
