Breakfast at Basic
Each Saturday we host a free hot breakfast which is open to the entire community known as Breakfast at Basic. This ecumenical effort involves many churches from around the community to provide, prepare and serve a nutritious meal to all that wish to join us. Food ,fellowship and worship is the focus among believers, seekers, the hungry, the homeless and the lonely. This ministry is operated in partnership with another area ministry, Disciple’s Kitchen.
This evening meal and worship service takes place each Wednesday evening at 6 pm in the church fellowship hall. A worship service preceded by a nutritious meal offers an opportunity for fellowship and spiritual growth.
Casa de Amistad
This local nonprofit is housed and operates out of our church’s facilities. It offers various programs of education and material assistance to the community. Casa de Amistad began as a ministry of the Staunton District of the UMC and established its own 501c3 status in 2011. An after-school homework assistance effort called Amigos Readers operates during the school year and Supply Closet opens on Saturdays in conjunction with the free breakfast providing personal care and household items to those in attendance. If you are interested in volunteering contact Jennifer Strother at (540)946-7958.
We see the church van as a ministry in itself. From picking up children and adults with transportation for Sunday School and worship to providing transportation for WARM Shelter residents to taking people on trips aimed at fun and fellowship, the van drivers are opening their hearts and taking the wheel.
We also participate in assembling kits (health, school, layette) for distribution worldwide through global missions of the General Conference of the UMC. Each Christmas, we gather hats, gloves and mittens for the Redbird Mission. We support the Baby Bottle Campaign of ComfortCare Women’s Health. Other opportunities to serve present themselves throughout the year and Basic UMC encourages a life modeled after Matthew 25, verses 31-46.
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of
the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
