Please note that in keeping with our Safe Sanctuary policy, all adult volunteers will be required to complete a background check prior to working with youth and children.
Amigos Readers After-School Program
If school is in session, you can count on hearing the laughter of kids ringing from the top floor of our Education Building. This is where we host Casa de Amistad’s Amigos Readers program. From 3 until 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, students ranging from Pre-K to 12th grade flock to us for homework help, computer access, and help with or resources for their projects. We’re always in need of adult volunteers to assist students — and no, you don’t have to have been a teacher to volunteer!
We try to be the best stewards of what God has graciously provided as possible. For that reason, we set aside a portion of our church grounds for use as a Community Garden. You can support this initiative by donating soil and amendments, seedlings, seeds, and tools, or by volunteering to help in the garden. We are also seeking the help of professional landscapers and agriculturalists in expanding our existing garden.
Disciple’s Kitchen (Saturday breakfast)
On Saturday mornings, we are blessed by the presence of members of our community’s marginal population who join us for breakfast and the opportunity to receive free personal care products and other basic necessities. We’d love for you to join us as we welcome our brothers and sisters into the house — and arms — of God.
God’s Table (Wednesday dinner)
Each Wednesday, we serve a free, hot meal to anywhere from 60 to 120 members of our community. After we eat, we worship together. We’re always looking for individuals and groups interested helping us make this happen.
Praise Team Mentors
We’re looking for a few adults to help with our youth-led praise-and-worship teams. If you love to sing or play an instrument, this is for you!
If you’re a college student studying music education, vocal or instrumental performance, or other branch of music and are seeking a fun internship, we’d like to talk to you. Our youth praise-and-worship teams practice 4-6 p.m. each Sunday afternoon and are responsible for leading congregational singing and providing some special music at our 11 a.m. Sunday worship. You would need to be available for weekly practices, and while we’d love for you to join us for worship each week, that’s negotiable.
Adult Volunteers Needed
Do you like to cook? Can jams, jellies and other foods? Paint or draw? Crochet or Knit? Have you ever dreamed of having your own retail store? Do you enjoy writing? WE NEED YOU! Share your talent and skill with members of our youth group as we start a series of new ministries and expand our Sunday afternoon programming.
The Student Ministry team needs:
Volunteers to prepare a meal for the youth: Are you willing to drop off a crock pot of soup or chili, a tray of sandwiches, or other yummy food for our youth one Sunday evening every few weeks or months?
Praise Band and Choir mentors: We’re looking for a few adults to help with our youth-led praise-and-worship teams. If you love to sing or play an instrument, this is for you!
Cooking team leaders to work with youth in preparing our weekly Sunday night supper. (Begins in late Spring)
Mission project supervisors to work youth 4-6 p.m. Sundays on our soon-to-be-launched Secret Boutique clothing ministry, #ItBeginsWithMe social media project, and other ministry and mission outreaches.
Basic Goodness Canning Team members: This spring/summer, the youth will launch a new retail canning project designed to financially support the work of Basic UMC.
Social Media Project | #ItBeginsWithMe
Each day, millions of middle- and high-school students hold in their hands the power to change the world. Thanks to social media, teens have been given a powerful voice that we are harnessing to work for peace and create positive change in our own lives, our community, our country, and our world.
Through a grant from the United Methodist Foundation of the UMC’s Virginia Conference, we have secured some of the funds to build a website at www.peaceandchange.org. This site will be a hub for social media content created by teens from around the globe with the intended purpose of spreading peace and creating positive change. The site will also be a source of education for students, parents, educators, and the public on the social justice issues facing teens. To make it happen we need:
Students committed to peace and positive change who will create content to be shared on our social media platforms using #ItBeginsWithMe
Teachers who will challenge their students to create content for #ItBeginsWithMe campaigns or sponsor #ItBeginsWithMe clubs at their schools
Donors to fund our website and social media platforms, promotional materials, and administrative costs
Web designers and developers to help build our platforms and apps
Graphic designers to create a line of Peace Tees and design print and digital promotional materials, graphics, logos, etc.
Local, regional, and national celebrities to help launch our Pies for Peace viral video challenge, wear our #ItBeginsWithMe/PeaceAndChange.org tees, and get the word out about our mission.
Fashion Project | Secret Boutique
We all want to look good and feel good about ourselves. Unfortunately, for too many middle- and high-school students, looking good and feeling good about themselves is something that seems to be out of reach — particularly for those who live in or on the fringes of poverty.
Through our Secret Boutique ministry, we provide:
Free, fashionable clothing in a secret upscale retail setting where our customers are VIPs and are treated to an incredible “shopping” experience
Fashion advice, wardrobe consultations, and Personal Shopping Support
Free hair cuts, styling services, manicures and pedicures, and personal care products
Beauty, Fitness, Health, and Wellness classes
Volunteer opportunities for students and adults designed to foster a sense of community and provide a network of support for students who are often targeted by bullies
Anti-bullying, anger management, and conflict resolution education for students, families, and adults
